Our Journey so far…

Since becoming carbon neutral* in 2020, we’ve continued to monitor our carbon footprint and have expanded the scope of our reporting to include hotel stays, staff commuting, and working from home. These are Scope 3 emissions; indirect carbon emissions outside our direct control, but within our value chain. We’ve introduced a number of initiatives as part of this, including incentives and support for our employees to switch to a renewable electricity supply at home, as well as policies that make low carbon travel and commuting easier.

Whilst we’re working to reduce the emissions we create, we need to offset any emissions we’re still producing to remain carbon neutral in our operations*. We do this by supporting the Bokhol Solar Project, which gives around 160,000 people access to renewable energy and provides Senegalese people with jobs. Since we’ve been supporting the project, they have constructed two schools and 5 classrooms, with the electricity powered by solar energy.

We’ve appointed a dedicated Sustainability Manager to help us drive our sustainability agenda forwards, and we’ve taken on a sustainability placement student from a local university to support and inspire the next generation of sustainability experts. With their help, we voluntarily reported under the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) scheme for the first time for 2019, fulfilling our ongoing commitment to being transparent about our emissions. Since 2020, we have been obligated to report under SECR, and you can view our latest report, here.

For us, sustainability encompasses more than just the environment – it’s about having a positive impact across our whole sphere of influence. One of the ways we have done this is becoming an accredited Living Wage employer, to ensure everyone receives a fair pay, including our third party contracted staff.
what’s next to come…

We’re keen to reduce our business travel emissions, which made up the largest part of our carbon footprint before the pandemic. Over the last year, we’ve made several changes and brought in new policies to address our emissions in this area. These include working on a new hybrid working model that redefines our use of the office and reduces the need for employees to travel unnecessarily. We’ll be looking to see the impact of these changes as we return to our new normality.

We’re aiming towards net zero, but to do this in a meaningful way we need to truly understand ALL of our emissions. That’s why we are working with EcoAct, to fully map our Scope 3 emissions across all 15 GHG protocol categories. The next step will then be to set targets to reduce emissions in Scopes 1, 2 and 3 and publicly report on our annual progress.

We know that we may never be able to entirely eliminate all of our carbon emissions, no matter how many decarbonisation measures we implement. So we’ll need to remove these residual emissions from the atmosphere through projects that capture carbon, in order to work towards net zero. Our next step is to research and understand how we can utilise these projects alongside our offsetting activities.

As well as improving our own sustainability, we’re passionate about helping our customers achieve their own goals. We’re working with leading technology partners to develop innovative solutions that will enable our customers to better manage their energy and enable a net zero grid. As the energy landscape continues to change, so should our products and services, helping businesses to adapt to a more sustainable future whilst also providing commercial, environmental and reputational benefits for them.
